and volume numbers—boastfully and in order to deceive the readers, giving the impression that this resulted from his own tracing of the hadith which he had failed to find. Thirdly:
Good heavens! How beautifully it has been said:
Whatever trait a man may possess,
Though he thinks it hidden from people, it will become known.
As is related in the weak hadith: “No servant conceals an inward quality except that Allah clothes him in its garment: if it is good, then good; and if it is evil, then evil.” How fine a hadith it would be, if only it were authentic. (1)
Allah has exposed this claimant’s plagiarism, ignorance, self-admiration, and conceit by inspiring him to convert the reference numbers of the hadiths into page numbers, as a means of deception and camouflage—as noted above. These included page 115 of volume 11, where the hadith whose presence he denied is found, under the number assigned by Muhammad Fu'ad, 6315. Yet he turned it into a page number, as you have seen, in order to obscure it. At the beginning of this source documentation, I myself cited the volume, page, and hadith number together.
He has committed a great many similar instances of confusion and assaults upon scholarship in his annotations, through which he attacks me and my books. An example has already preceded under hadith 2840; refer to it.
The fourth and last person, Allah willing, among those tested by this hadith is the one called Hassan Abd al-Mannan. This man published a new edition of Riyad al-Salihin this year, mangling it beyond recognition and handling it so badly that attributing the book to Imam al-Nawawi has become an obvious falsehood and fabrication, for many reasons, some of which I have mentioned elsewhere. (2) Among them is that he omitted approximately four hundred hadiths from it, as well as al-Nawawi’s comments on them by way of explanation, or of declaring them sound or authentic. This hadith is among those that he omitted.
