It also has a second corroborating report, from Umm Salamah, attributed to the Prophet, and a third, attributed to the Companion Ibn Masʿud. Both were previously cited under hadith 1633. The report attributed to the Companion has an authentic chain of transmission, while the one preceding it may be graded good, for all of its narrators are trustworthy except Hassan ibn Mukhariq, whom no one besides Ibn Hibban declared trustworthy (4 / 163 and 6 / 223). Two trustworthy narrators related from him, and he was a Successor, as I concluded in Taysir al-Intifaʿ. In light of what has preceded, I consider it more likely that the hadith, through the combined strength of these chains, is good at the very least—especially since the prohibition of seeking treatment with forbidden substances and foul remedies has been established, as I explained in the place referred to above. And Allah knows best.
Note: The earlier report of Ibn Sirin from Abu Hurayrah, transmitted by Abu Nuʿaym, was attributed by al-Suyuti in al-Jamiʿ al-Kabir to Ibn Sirin in mursal form, without mentioning Abu Hurayrah. I do not know whether the wording connecting it to Abu Hurayrah was omitted from the copy of al-Tibb from which al-Suyuti quoted, or whether it was added by some copyists in our version. And Allah knows best.
2882 — “Whoever takes into his care an orphan—whether related to him or not—until Allah makes the orphan independent of him, Paradise becomes incumbent for him.”
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Awsat (2 / 26 / 1 / 5477): Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Abi Khaythamah narrated to us; he said: al-Qasim ibn Saʿid narrated to us, from al-Musayyab ibn Sharik, who said: al-Haytham Abu (in the original: Ibn) Saʿid narrated to us; ʿAbd Allah ibn Tamim ibn Tarifah narrated to us from his father, from ʿAdi ibn Hatim, attributed to the Prophet. He said: “ʿAbd Allah ibn Tamim ibn Tarifah did not transmit any hadith with a connected chain other than this one, nor is anything narrated from ʿAdi except through this chain of transmission. Al-Qasim ibn Saʿid alone narrated it from al-Musayyab ibn Sharik.”
