and the sounder view is that his hadith is good when he explicitly states that he heard it directly. His explicit statement to that effect is established, as will appear in more than one narration from him. Muhammad ibn Yahya ibn Hibban was a trustworthy Successor, among the narrators relied upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim. On its face, his report is mursal; however, it is authentically established with a connected chain, mentioning Ibn Umar in it. Ibn Abi Shaybah included it in al-Musannaf (14/228/18177): “Abbad ibn al-Awwam narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, from Muhammad ibn Yahya ibn Hibban, who said: Ibn al-Zubayr only fixed the warranty period for a slave at three days because the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to Munqidh ibn Amr: ‘No deception. When you sell something, you have the option for three days.’”
Al-Daraqutni also transmitted it in his Sunan (3/55/220), through Muhammad ibn Amr ibn al-Abbas al-Bahili, who said: Abd al-Aʿla informed us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, who said: Nafiʿ informed me that Abdullah ibn Umar told him: “A man from the Ansar had an impediment in his speech, and he was continually cheated in sales. So he came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and mentioned this to him. He said: ‘When you sell, say: “No deception,”’ twice.” Muhammad said: “Muhammad ibn Yahya ibn Hibban also told me: ‘He was my grandfather …’”
I say: He then cited it like Ibn Majah’s narration, adding: “He lived a long life—one hundred and thirty years. During the time of Uthman, when the population had spread and grown numerous, he would buy merchandise in the market and return home with it, having been grievously overcharged. His family would reproach him, saying: ‘Why did you buy it?!’ He would say: ‘I have the option: if I am pleased, I keep it; and if I am displeased, I return it. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, granted me the option for three days.’ So he would return the merchandise to its owner the next day or the day after, and he would say: ‘By Allah, I will not accept it. You took my merchandise and gave me dirhams.’ He would say: ‘The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, granted me the option for three days,’
