Abu Nuʿaym also narrated it in al-Ṭibb (folio 10/2) through another route from Sufyan with the same wording, but he narrated it as mursal. In this chapter, he also narrated a corroborating report through two routes from Suhayl ibn Abi Salih, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah, with similar wording. Its chain of transmission is authentic.
2874 — “Will you not ask me what made me laugh?” We said, “O Messenger of Allah, what made you laugh?” He said: “I saw people from my Ummah being led to Paradise in chains—how hateful those chains are to them!¹” We said, “Who are they?” He said: “They are non-Arabs whom the Muhajirun take captive and then bring into Islam.”
Abu Nuʿaym narrated it in Akhbar Isfahan (2/298), saying: Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn al-Fadl narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Abi Hatim narrated to us; Yazid ibn Sinan, in Egypt, and ʿAbbad ibn al-Walid both narrated to us; Habban ibn Hilal narrated to us; Mubarak ibn Fudalah narrated to me; Kathir Abu Muhammad narrated to me; Abu al-Tufayl narrated to me, saying: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, laughed so heartily that he was overcome by laughter,² then said: “[the hadith].”
I say: This is a good chain of transmission, Allah willing—either good in itself or good by virtue of external corroboration, in view of the corroborating chains and supporting reports that will follow. Its narrators are trustworthy, and their biographies are recorded in al-Tahdhib, except that Kathir Abu Muhammad is unknown; nevertheless, Ibn Hibban declared him trustworthy (5/332). As for ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Abi Hatim, he was a trustworthy hadith master and the author of the great work al-Jarh wa-l-Taʿdil (Narrator Criticism and Accreditation).
