I say: It is narrated through Muʿadh ibn ʿAwadh Allah al-Qurashi: “ʿAwf narrated to us from Abu al-Siddiq al-Naji, from him.” Al-Tabarani said: “Muʿadh ibn ʿAwadh Allah alone narrated it.” I say: I did not find a biographical entry for him in the books available to me; perhaps he is mentioned in Ibn Hibban’s Trustworthy Narrators. I subsequently found him there (9/178), where he said: “His hadith is sound.” The rest of its narrators are trustworthy and are narrators of the Six Books, apart from al-Tabarani’s shaykh, Ibrahim ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Muslim al-Kajji, who was a trustworthy imam. It has a corroborating report from the hadith of Ibn Masʿud and others. The discussion of it has already appeared under no. 1552.
2859 — “A vow is only that by which the Countenance of Allah is sought.”
Al-Bayhaqi recorded it (10/67) through the route of ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn al-Harith al-Makhzumi, from ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb, from his father, from his grandfather, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said this. I say: This is a good chain, Allah willing, for this ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn al-Harith was truthful, though prone to errors, as stated in al-Taqrib. The narration of ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb from his father from his grandfather is accepted as proof, as has been established by the verifying scholars. I have clarified this in Sahih Sunan Abi Dawud, the original edition (no. 124).
Al-Bayhaqi also recorded the hadith (10/75), as did Ahmad (2/183), through another route from ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn al-Harith with the same chain; it includes the circumstances that occasioned the hadith. Abu al-Zinad also followed him in narrating it from ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb, in a similar wording, as recorded by al-Tabarani in al-Awsat (1/77/1/1412, according to my numbering). Its chain includes ʿAbd Allah ibn Nafiʿ al-Madani, who is weak, as stated in al-Majmaʿ (4/187).
