356), from al-‘Ala ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman, from his father, who witnessed a funeral over which Marwan ibn al-Hakam led the prayer. Abu Hurayrah went with Marwan until they sat down in the cemetery. Then Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri came and said to Marwan, “Give me your hand.” He gave him his hand, and he said, “Stand up.” So he stood. Marwan then said to Abu Sa‘id, “Why did you make me stand?” He replied, “Whenever the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, saw a funeral procession, he would stand until it passed by,” and then cited the above wording. Marwan said, “Are you telling the truth, Abu Hurayrah?” He replied, “Yes.” He said, “What prevented you from telling me?” He replied, “You were the imam, so you sat down, and I sat down.”
I say: Its chain of transmission is authentic according to Muslim’s criteria. Al-Hakim said the same, and al-Dhahabi concurred with him. I have chosen to cite the hadith here, although it was previously cited in abbreviated form under no. 2017 through the narration of Ibn Majah and Ahmad, because this version contains Abu Hurayrah’s confirmation of Abu Sa‘id’s report. Its narration from Jabir through Muslim and others was previously cited there. I add here that ‘Abd ibn Humayd also narrated it in al-Muntakhab min Musnadihi (folio 151/2), as did Ibn Hibban (3939, al-Ihsan) and Ibn ‘Adi (folio 188/2).
The hadith has also been narrated with an addition to its text: “Indeed, death has terrors. When the death of one of your brethren comes upon any of you, let him say: ‘Indeed, we belong to Allah, and to Him we shall return; and indeed, to our Lord we shall return. O Allah, record him among the righteous, place his record in ‘Illiyyin, and look after his descendants among those who remain. O Allah, do not deprive us of his reward, and do not put us to trial after him.’” Al-Tabarani narrated it (3/163/1) through two routes from Qays ibn al-Rabi‘, from Abu Hashim al-Rummani, from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ‘Abbas, attributed to the Prophet. I say: This is a weak chain of transmission. Regarding Qays ibn al-Rabi‘, al-Taqrib states:
