ankles; and if you insist, then here, above the ankles, for Allah does not love every arrogant boaster.” He said: “Its chain of transmission is authentic.” Al-Dhahabi agreed with him, and they were correct.
The hadith also has corroboration in a mursal report narrated by Qatadah: a man greeted the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—saying, “Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah!” The Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—disliked this and said: “That is the greeting of the dead.” Ibn Abi Shaybah narrated it in al-Musannaf (8/617) with an authentic chain of transmission to him.
2847 — “Your children have a right over you that you treat them equitably, just as you have a right over them that they show you filial devotion.”
Al-Tayalisi narrated it (p. 107, no. 789): Shu‘bah related to us, from Mujalid, from al-Sha‘bi, from al-Nu‘man ibn Bashir: his father gave him a gift and wished to have the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—bear witness to it. He said: “Have you given each of your children a gift as you gave him one?” He replied, “No.” The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—then said the words cited above.
Its narrators are trustworthy and are among those accepted by al-Bukhari and Muslim, except Mujalid—who is Ibn Sa‘id—who was not strong and changed in his later life. Muslim narrated from him only alongside another narrator. However, he was corroborated in the meaning of this hadith: Muslim (5/66), al-Bukhari in al-Adab al-Mufrad (16), Ibn Majah (2/67), and Ahmad (4/269 and 270) narrated it from Dawud ibn Abi Hind, from al-Sha‘bi, with the wording: “My father took me, carrying me, to the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, bear witness that I have given al-Nu‘man such-and-such of my wealth.’ He said: ‘Have you given each of your sons what you gave al-Nu‘man?’”
