2843 — “Indeed, your Lord is amazed by a young man who has no youthful waywardness.”
Al-Rūyānī narrated it in his Musnad (9/50/2) from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Wahb: Ibn Lahīʿah informed us, from Mushraḥ ibn Hāʿān, from ʿUqbah, in a report traced back to the Prophet. He then narrated it (51/1) through this same chain, except that he put Abū ʿAshānah in place of Mushraḥ. Abū Saʿīd Ibn al-Aʿrābī likewise narrated it in his Muʿjam (86/2), from Saʿīd ibn Shuraḥbīl, from Ibn Lahīʿah.
I say: This is a good chain of transmission, because Ibn Wahb’s narrations from Ibn Lahīʿah are authentic, as is well known. Moreover, both Mushraḥ ibn Hāʿān and Abū ʿAshānah—whose name was Ḥayy ibn Yūmin—are acceptable hadith narrators. Thus, it does not harm the report that it came at one time through the former and at another through the latter, since this is a shift from one trustworthy narrator to another; and the second is more trustworthy than the first. Perhaps the latter is more likely, in view of Saʿīd ibn Shuraḥbīl’s narration from Ibn Lahīʿah, from him. This Ibn Shuraḥbīl was truthful and was among al-Bukhārī’s narrators.
This is further supported by Qutaybah ibn Saʿīd’s narration: Ibn Lahīʿah narrated to us, from Abū ʿAshānah, with it. Aḥmad recorded it (4/151) with the wording: “Indeed, Allah is amazed …” Al-Ṭabarānī likewise recorded it in al-Kabīr (17/309/853) through two routes from Ibn Lahīʿah, one of them through Qutaybah. Kāmil also narrated it: Ibn Lahīʿah narrated to us; Abū ʿAshānah narrated to us, with it. Abū Yaʿlā recorded it in his Musnad (1749). Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim said in al-Sunnah (1/250/571—al-Ẓilāl): Hishām ibn ʿAmmār narrated to us, saying: Ibn Lahīʿah wrote to us with it.
