a violation of the Sacred Law—for example, praying in sandals. The Prophet commanded this in order to differ from the Jews. Differing from them may also relate to something that Allah has created in all people alike, with no distinction between Muslim and disbeliever, man and woman, such as grey hair. Yet he commanded that it be dyed in order to differ from them, as mentioned above. This is among the strongest possible commands to differ from them. Therefore, the Muslim who is keen to preserve his religion should observe this in every aspect of his life. By doing so, he will avoid contravening the command to differ from them, quite apart from being saved from imitating the disbelievers—an intractable ailment in our age. Allah is the One whose help is sought.
2835 — “Straighten up, Sawād!”
Ibn Isḥāq recorded it in al-Sīrah (2/266, Ibn Hishām’s Sīrah), and through his route Abū Nuʿaym in Maʿrifat al-Ṣaḥābah (f. 303/1), and Ibn al-Athīr in Usud al-Ghābah (2/332). Ibn Isḥāq said: Ḥibbān ibn Wāsiʿ ibn Ḥibbān narrated to me from some elders of his people that the Messenger of Allah was arranging the ranks of his Companions on the day of Badr. He had in his hand a small staff with which he was straightening the men’s ranks. He passed by Sawād ibn Ghaziyyah—an ally of Banū ʿAdī ibn al-Najjār—who was protruding from the line, and he poked him in the stomach with the staff, saying, “Straighten up, Sawād!”
Sawād said, “Messenger of Allah, you have hurt me, though Allah has sent you with truth and justice; so grant me retaliation.” The Messenger of Allah uncovered his stomach and said, “Take your retaliation.” Sawād then embraced him and kissed his stomach. He asked, “What prompted you to do this, Sawād?” He replied, “Messenger of Allah, what you see has come to pass, and I wanted the last thing between us to be for my skin to touch your skin.” The Messenger of Allah prayed for his welfare and spoke to him.
I say: This is a good chain of transmission, Allah willing, because the elders from Ḥibbān’s people were from the Anṣār. If they were Companions, there is no problem; and if they were Successors, then they are among
