2825 — “Al-Hirah was shown to me like the fangs of dogs, and you shall surely conquer it.”
Ibn Hibban transmitted it in his Sahih (1709), and Ibn Abi ‘Asim in al-Wuhdan (fol. 269/1), through Muhammad ibn Yahya ibn Abi ‘Umar al-‘Adani: Sufyan narrated to us, from Isma‘il ibn Abi Khalid, from Qays ibn Abi Hazim, from ‘Adi ibn Hatim, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said—and he mentioned the hadith. A man then stood and said, “O Messenger of Allah, grant me Buqaylah’s daughter.” He replied, “She is yours.” So they gave her to him. Her father then came and said, “Will you sell her back to me?” He said, “Yes.” He asked, “For how much?” He replied, “Name whatever price you wish.” He said, “For a thousand dirhams.” He replied, “I have taken it.” They said to him, “If only you had said thirty thousand!” He said, “Is there any number greater than a thousand?”
I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission; its narrators are reliable and meet Muslim’s criteria. Al-Tabarani also transmitted it in al-Mu‘jam al-Kabir (17/81/183), and al-Bayhaqi in al-Sunan (9/136) and al-Dala’il (6/326), through other routes from al-‘Adani with the same chain, except that al-Tabarani said, “her brother” in place of “her father.” Al-Haythami (6/212) said: “Al-Tabarani transmitted it, and its narrators are those of the authentic collections.”
After Ibn Hibban’s narration in Mawarid al-Zam’an, he said: “I say: This is how it appears in this narration: that the one who bought her was her father. What is well known, however, is that the one who bought her was ‘Abd al-Masih, her brother. And Allah knows best.”
