Silsilat al-Ahadith al-SahihahNasir al-Din al-Albani

in al-Sunan al-Kubrā (1/46), and Ibn ʿAsākir in Tārīkh Dimashq (17/315/1), through several routes from Muʿāwiyah ibn Ṣāliḥ, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Jubayr ibn Nufayr, from his father: Abū Jubayr came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, with his daughter, whom the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had married. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, ordered that water for minor ablution be brought for him and said: “Perform minor ablution, O Abū Jubayr.” Abū Jubayr began with his mouth, so the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Do not begin with your mouth…”—the hadith. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, called for water for minor ablution and washed his hands until he had thoroughly cleansed them. He then rinsed his mouth and cleansed his nose three times, washed his face three times, washed his right hand up to the elbow (1) [three times], and his left hand three times, wiped over his head, and washed his feet. This is the wording of al-Dūlābī.

I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission; its narrators are trustworthy narrators of Muslim. There is, however, an apparent gap in the chain, since Jubayr ibn Nufayr was not a Companion, although he lived into the pre-Islamic period. Yet it appears that he received it from his father, Nufayr, who was a well-known Companion. Al-Nasāʾī recorded in al-Kunā, through the route of Ṣafwān ibn ʿAmr: “ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Jubayr ibn Nufayr narrated to me from his father, from his grandfather.” Others likewise narrated it from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān through this same chain. See al-Iṣābah and the forthcoming hadith (2823).

Note: In al-Sunan, it appears as: “…from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Jubayr ibn Nufayr, from his father Jubayr, that he came…” This makes it a report of Jubayr, and identifies him as the one who came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. This is undoubtedly a typographical error, since it conflicts with the other sources, while the route of transmission is one and the same.
