“He makes mistakes and contradicts [others].” Al-Ḥāfiẓ said: “Of unknown status.” I say: The correct view is al-Dhahabī’s statement cited above: “Trustworthy,” since a number of narrators transmitted from him. He may nevertheless have made errors, as indicated by Ibn Ḥibbān’s statement cited above.
The hadith has a corroborating mursal report from Yazīd ibn Rūmān, transmitted by Ibn Hishām in al-Sīrah (2/202–203). There is another, abbreviated corroborating report, similar in wording, from Anas ibn Mālik. Al-Dūlābī transmitted it (fol. 12/2): al-Naḍr ibn Salamah narrated it to us through an authentic chain from him. Yet this al-Naḍr—namely Shādhān al-Marwazī—is accused of fabricating hadiths, and his biography appears in Lisān al-Mīzān.
However, al-Ṭabarānī narrated it in al-Kabīr and al-Awsaṭ in a shorter form. Al-Haythamī said: “It contains ʿAbbād ibn Kathīr al-Thaqafī, who is abandoned.” The second part of the hadith under discussion has a corroborating report from Ibn ʿAmr, recorded by Abū Dāwūd and others through a good chain. It has been documented in al-Irwāʾ (2208), and other corroborating reports appear in Majmaʿ al-Zawāʾid and al-Mustadrak (4/45).
2820 — “Perform ablution, O Abū Jubayr! Do not begin with your mouth, for the disbeliever begins with his mouth.”
Ibn Ḥibbān transmitted it in his Ṣaḥīḥ (148), as did al-Dūlābī in al-Asmāʾ wa-al-Kunā (1/23), Abū Aḥmad al-Ḥākim in al-Kunā (fol. 61/2), and al-Bayhaqī
