219 – “He used to kiss me while he was fasting, and I was fasting.” ʿĀʾishah is the narrator.
Abū Dāwūd (1/374) and Aḥmad (6/179) recorded it by two routes from Sufyān, from Saʿd ibn Ibrāhīm, from Ṭalḥah ibn ʿAbd Allāh—meaning ibn ʿUthmān al-Qurashī—from ʿĀʾishah, may Allah be pleased with her, as a marfūʿ report.
I say: Its chain is sound according to al-Bukhārī’s criteria.
Aḥmad (6/134, 175–176, 269–270, 270) likewise transmitted it, as did al-Nasāʾī in al-Kubrā (fol. 83/2), al-Ṭayālisī (1/187), al-Shāfiʿī in his Sunan (1/260), al-Ṭaḥāwī in Sharḥ al-Maʿānī (1/346), al-Bayhaqī (4/223), and Abū Yaʿlā in his Musnad (215/2), through further chains from Saʿd ibn Ibrāhīm with the wording:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ wanted to kiss me, so I said, ‘I am fasting!’ He replied, ‘And I am fasting!’ and then he kissed me.”
This ḥadīth rebuts the report narrated by Muḥammad ibn al-Ashʿath from ʿĀʾishah in which she said, “He would not touch any part of my face while I was fasting.” That chain is weak, as I have explained in al-Aḥādīth al-Ḍaʿīfah, no. 962.
Al-Ḥāfiẓ attributed the ḥadīth, in its second wording, to al-Nasāʾī in Fatḥ (4/123).
The latter half of the report also has another chain from ʿĀʾishah: Isrāʾīl narrates from Ziyād, from ʿAmr ibn Maymūn, from her, that she said, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would kiss me while I was fasting.” Al-Ṭaḥāwī produced it with an authentic chain. Isrāʾīl is the son of Yūnus ibn Abī Isḥāq al-Sabīʿī, and Ziyād is ibn ʿAlāqah. Aḥmad (6/258) likewise recorded it through Shaybān, from Ziyād ibn ʿAlāqah, from ʿAmr
