2813 — “Moses, peace be upon him, was given the Tablets, and I was given al-Mathani (the oft-repeated verses).”
Al-Isma‘ili transmitted it in Mu‘jam Shuyukhihi (fol. 82/1): Abu ‘Abd Allah al-Husayn ibn Ahmad ibn Mansur—Sajjadah—narrated to us in Baghdad: Abu Ma‘mar narrated to us; Jarir narrated to us from al-A‘mash, from Muslim al-Butayn, from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ‘Abbas, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who said it.
I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission. All its narrators are trustworthy and are among the narrators of the two Sahih collections, apart from this Sajjadah. Al-Khatib profiled him in al-Tarikh (8/4), citing a number of hadith masters who narrated from him, and said: “He was unobjectionable.” Abu Ma‘mar’s name was Isma‘il ibn Ibrahim al-Hudhali. He was corroborated by ‘Uthman ibn Abi Shaybah, who said: Jarir narrated it to us through the same chain, in a fuller wording. Abu Dawud transmitted it from him, while al-Nasa’i and others transmitted it through another route from Jarir, in abbreviated form. It has been documented in Sahih Abi Dawud (1312).
One contemporary writer, in writing about the merits of certain surahs, claimed that this hadith of Abu Dawud is attributed to the Companion. This is one of his manifest errors. The one protected from error is he whom Allah protects.
Note: I had included the hadith under discussion in Da‘if al-Jami‘ al-Saghir wa Ziyadatuhu because I had not come across its chain of transmission, and I had therefore left a blank for it there. When I came across its chain and its authenticity became clear to me, I hastened to document it here and decided to transfer it to Sahih al-Jami‘. Allah, the Exalted, is the One who grants success; there is no god worthy of worship but Him.
