in his Sahih (4647—al-Ihsan). The hadith has been cited in al-Sahihah (1074 and 2525). It would indeed have been more fitting for him to include this hadith—which meets his own criteria—rather than the hadith concerning the Vision mentioned above, for Wakīʿ ibn ʿAdas was corroborated in narrating it, as previously indicated. The time has now come to cite the source of the corroborating report, so I say:
ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAyyāsh al-Samʿī al-Anṣārī al-Qubāʾī—from the clan of Banū ʿAmr ibn ʿAwf—narrated from Dulham ibn al-Aswad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ḥājib ibn ʿĀmir ibn al-Muntafiq al-ʿUqaylī, from his father, from his uncle Laqīṭ ibn ʿĀmir. Dulham said: “My father, al-Aswad, also related it to me from ʿĀṣim ibn Laqīṭ: Laqīṭ came as part of a delegation to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him...” The hadith continues at length over two large pages.
It includes the following statement attributed to the Prophet: “Allah knows that, on the day of rain, He will look down upon you while you are in dire need and apprehensive; then He will continue to laugh, knowing that your relief is close at hand.” Laqīṭ said: “We shall never be deprived of good from a Lord who laughs.”
It was recorded by ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad in Zawāʾid al-Musnad (4/13) and al-Sunnah (1120) in this manner; by Ibn Khuzaymah in al-Tawḥīd (122–125); and by al-Ṭabarānī in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (19/211–214). Ibn Khuzaymah does not include Dulham’s second chain from ʿĀṣim ibn Laqīṭ, whereas al-Ṭabarānī includes it but not the first chain. Therefore, al-Haythamī said in Majmaʿ al-Zawāʾid (10/340): “ʿAbd Allāh and al-Ṭabarānī narrated it in similar wording. One of ʿAbd Allāh’s two routes has a continuous chain, and its narrators are trustworthy; the other chain and al-Ṭabarānī’s chain are mursal from ʿĀṣim ibn Laqīṭ, that Laqīṭ...”
I say: As for his statement, “...its narrators are trustworthy,”
