Fourthly, al-Shawkani conceded in al-Nayl (4/220) the correctness of Ibn al-Munir’s statement: “There is no evidence for the prohibition of eating during a voluntary fast without an excuse except the general proofs, such as Allah’s saying: ‘Do not render your deeds void.’ Yet the particular proof takes precedence over the general one, such as the hadith of Salman...” If this is so, then the verse, in its generality, constitutes clear evidence for our position, since there is no proof to specify it in the matter under discussion. And Allah, exalted is He, knows best.
2803 — “To proceed: O people, Allah has removed from you the arrogance of the Jahiliyyah. People are of two kinds: a righteous, God-fearing person, noble before his Lord; and a wicked, wretched person, insignificant before his Lord.” He then recited: “O mankind, indeed We created you from a male and a female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another,” until he had recited the verse. Then he said: “I say this, and I seek Allah’s forgiveness for myself and for you.”
Ibn Hibban recorded it in his Sahih (3817): Makḥul, in Beirut, informed us: Muhammad ibn Abd Allah ibn Yazid narrated to us; Abd Allah ibn Raja’ narrated to us; Musa ibn Uqbah narrated to us from Abd Allah ibn Dinar, from Ibn Umar, who said: On the Day of the Conquest, the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, circumambulated the Ka‘bah on his camel al-Qaswa’, touching the Corner with his crook. He found no place for her to kneel in the mosque until she was taken out to the bottom of the valley, where she was made to kneel. He then praised Allah and extolled Him, and then spoke the words cited above.
I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission. Its narrators are trustworthy and are narrators of Muslim, apart from Makḥul and his teacher Muhammad ibn Abd Allah ibn Yazid; both are well-known and trustworthy.
