The hadith also has a supporting narration from Abu al-Darda’, attributed to the Prophet, with the wording: “Do not associate anything with Allah ... and do not drink wine, for it is the key to every evil.” It is an authentic hadith, which I have traced in al-Irwa’ (2086).

I found the following supporting reports for its first part:

First: from Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), attributed to the Prophet, with the wording: “Avoid the mother of all abominations ...” the hadith. Ibn Hibban recorded it in his Sahih (5324—according to its arrangement) with a chain containing a narrator who has been criticized. However, a trustworthy narrator contradicted him and reported it as a statement of Uthman, as I explained in my commentary on al-Ahadith al-Mukhtarah (no. 320).

Second: from Abdullah ibn Amr, attributed to the Prophet: “Avoid everything that intoxicates.” It was recorded by Abu Dawud (3701), and from him by al-Bayhaqi (8/310) and al-Daraqutni (4/258), as well as others. Its documentation, together with other supporting reports, has preceded in the second volume (886), so there is no need for repetition.

2799 — “When this verse in Surah al-Furqan was revealed: ‘Those who do not invoke another deity along with Allah, nor kill the soul which Allah has forbidden except by right,’ we were amazed at its leniency. Six months then passed, after which the verse in Surah al-Nisa’ was revealed: ‘Whoever kills a believer deliberately, his recompense is Hell, abiding therein forever; Allah is angry with him and curses him’—and he recited to the end.”
