First: Jabir’s hadith, narrated from him by Abu al-Zubayr, who said:
“When the Battle of Uhud took place and the people fled, the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was on one side with twelve men from the Ansar, among whom was Talhah ibn Ubayd Allah. The polytheists caught up with them, so the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, turned and said, ‘Who will face these people?’
Talhah said, ‘I will.’ The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, ‘Stay where you are.’ Then a man from the Ansar said, ‘I will, O Messenger of Allah!’ He said, ‘You.’ So he fought until he was killed.
Then he turned and saw the polytheists, so he said, ‘Who will face these people?’ Talhah said, ‘I will.’ He said, ‘Stay where you are.’ Then a man from the Ansar said, ‘I will.’ He said, ‘You.’ So he fought until he was killed.
He continued saying this, and a man from the Ansar would go out to face them, fighting as the one before him had fought until he was killed, until only the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and Talhah ibn Ubayd Allah remained. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, then said, ‘Who will face these people?’
