Al-Nasaʾi transmitted it (1/98).
Note: The preceding documentation makes clear the error found in the book Minhāj al-Muslim (“The Muslim’s Way”) by Shaykh Abu Bakr al-Jazaʾiri (p. 248, second edition, Dar al-Fikr): “The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, combined the sunset and night prayers on a rainy night. Al-Bukhari.” This is a further mistake, for he incorporated into the hadith Ayyub’s remark, “Perhaps it was on a rainy night?” and Jabir ibn Yazid’s reply, “Perhaps!” The fact is that I know of no hadith explicitly stating the permissibility of combining prayers due to rain, apart from what may be inferred from the previously cited hadith in Muslim: “without fear or rain.” This indicates that combining prayers because of rain was a recognized practice in his time, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. For this reason, the early generations acted upon it, as related in numerous reports in the Muṣannaf of ʿAbd al-Razzaq and that of Ibn Abi Shaybah.
Among them is the report from Nafiʿ, who said: “When it was a rainy night, our governors would delay the sunset prayer and bring forward the night prayer before the twilight had disappeared. Ibn ʿUmar would pray with them, seeing no objection in doing so.” ʿUbayd Allah said: “I saw al-Qasim and Salim praying with them on such a night.” Ibn Abi Shaybah transmitted it with an authentic chain meeting the conditions of the two Shaykhs.
2796 — “Had you said, ‘In the name of Allah,’ the angels would have carried you away while the people looked on.” He said this to Talhah when his fingers were severed and he exclaimed, “Hiss!”
Al-Suyuti cited it in al-Jamiʿ al-Kabir (“The Great Compilation”) on the authority of al-Nasaʾi, al-Tabarani, al-Bayhaqi in al-Dalaʾil (“The Proofs”), and Ibn ʿAsakir from Jabir; Abu Nuʿaym, Ibn ʿAsakir, and al-Diyaʾ from Talhah; al-Tabarani and Ibn ʿAsakir from Anas; and Ibn ʿAsakir from Ibn Shihab in mursal form. I shall now set forth the versions of these reports that I have been able to find:
