2789 — “O Allah, I love him, so love him”—meaning al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī.
Recorded by al-Bukhārī (3749), Muslim (7/130), and Aḥmad (4/283–284), as well as al-Ṭayālisī (732) and al-Ṭabarānī in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (2582), from Shuʿbah, who said: ʿAdī informed me; I heard al-Barāʾ, may Allah be pleased with him, say: “I saw the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, with al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī on his shoulder, saying: …” He then cited it.
Fuḍayl ibn Marzūq also narrated it from ʿAdī ibn Thābit in the same manner. Al-Ṭabarānī also recorded it (258) through Abū Nuʿaym, from him.
Abū Usāmah differed, narrating it from Fuḍayl ibn Marzūq in the same manner, except that he said: “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, saw al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusayn and said: ‘O Allah, I love them both, so love them both.’”
Thus, he included al-Ḥusayn in it. This is anomalous, since it contradicts Abū Nuʿaym’s narration from him and Shuʿbah’s narration from ʿAdī. Ashʿath ibn Sawwār corroborated him, narrating it from ʿAdī in the same manner. Al-Ṭabarānī recorded it (2584).
Yet this anomalous wording in the hadith of al-Barāʾ appears to have been reliably preserved in reports from other Companions:
- From ʿAṭāʾ, that a man informed him that he saw the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, holding al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusayn close to him and saying: “O Allah, I love them both, so love them both.”
