2788 — “It is not for a prophet to misappropriate [the spoils of war].” He said: “It was not for a prophet to be suspected by his Companions.”
Al-Bazzār recorded it in his Musnad (2197—Kashf al-Astār): Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥīm narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ibn ʿAṭāʾ narrated to us; Hārūn al-Qāriʾ narrated to us from al-Zubayr ibn al-Khurayt, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās... and he cited it. I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission. All its narrators are trustworthy and are among al-Bukhārī’s narrators, apart from ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ibn ʿAṭāʾ, who is among Muslim’s narrators.
Al-Haythamī said in Majmaʿ al-Zawāʾid (6/328): “Al-Bazzār narrated it, and its narrators are those of the Ṣaḥīḥ collections.” I say: Khusayf ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Ḥarrānī also corroborated him from ʿIkrimah with the same report, wording it: “This verse was revealed on the day of Badr: ‘It is not for a prophet to misappropriate [the spoils of war].’ A red velvet cloak went missing on the day of Badr, so some people said, ‘Perhaps the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, took it!’ Thereupon Allah Most High revealed: ‘It is not for a prophet to misappropriate [the spoils of war].’”
Al-Ṭabarī recorded it in his Exegesis (4/102), as did al-Bazzār (2198) and al-Ṭabarānī in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (11/364/12028 and 12029), through several routes from Khusayf with this chain. Abū Dāwūd (3971), al-Tirmidhī (3012), and al-Ṭabarī also recorded it through ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Ziyād: Khusayf narrated to us, saying: Muqsim narrated to us, saying: Ibn ʿAbbās narrated to me with this report. Al-Tirmidhī said: “A good, singular hadith.”
