saying: “Shuʿbah narrated it to us with the wording: ‘Maymūnah or Zaynab.’” ⦗2445⦘
Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar noted in Fatḥ al-Bārī (10/475) that Ibn Marzūq’s version is anomalous.
Al-Bukhārī gave the report the heading: “Chapter: Changing a name to one that is better.”
In the same chapter Ibn ʿAbbās said:
“Juwayriyah’s name had been Barrah, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ changed it to Juwayriyah, and he disliked that it be said, ‘He has just left the presence of Barrah.’”
212 – “Juwayriyah’s name had been Barrah, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ changed it to Juwayriyah, and he disliked that it be said, ‘He has just left the presence of Barrah.’”
Muslim recorded it (6/173), and so did al-Bukhārī in al-Adab al-Mufrad (831), Aḥmad (1/258, 326, 353), and Ibn Saʿd in al-Ṭabaqāt (8/84-85).
213 – “You are Jamīlah.”
Muslim transmitted it (6/173); likewise al-Bukhārī in al-Adab al-Mufrad (820), Abū Dāwūd (4952), al-Tirmidhī (2/137), and Aḥmad (2/18), from Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd through ʿUbaydullāh, who said: Nāfiʿ informed me from Ibn ʿUmar that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ changed the name ʿĀṣiyah and said, “You are Jamīlah.”
Al-Tirmidhī remarked, “This ḥadīth is good and singular; only Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd al-Qaṭṭān reported it with an elevated chain.”
I say: Rather, it is authentic, for al-Qaṭṭān is a trustworthy, precise memoriser, an Imām and exemplar, as al-Ḥāfiẓ states in al-Taqrīb. Ḥammād ibn Salamah also followed him from ʿUbaydullāh with the same report, adding that she was a daughter of ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him). Muslim recorded it, as did al-Dārimī (2/295) though he omitted this addition, whereas Ibn Mājah affirmed it (3733).
