Perhaps it was because of the critical examination we have mentioned that scholars successively cited the hadith with this preserved wording, “arrogance.” Al-Baghawī cited it without a chain in Sharḥ al-Sunnah (11/118), and al-Mundhirī in al-Targhīb (2/188, 3/32, and 4/15), where he said: “Some hadith masters have read it as ‘hoarded treasure’ (al-kanz), with a nūn and a zāy, but this is not well known.” The same wording appears in al-Mishkāh (2921), al-Ziyādah ʿalā al-Jāmiʿ al-Ṣaghīr (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Jāmiʿ, 6287), al-Jāmiʿ al-Kabīr, and other works.
2786 — “There is no iʿtikāf (devotional retreat) except in the three mosques.”
Al-Ismāʿīlī transmitted it in al-Muʿjam (112/2), through his teacher al-ʿAbbās ibn Aḥmad al-Washshā, who said: “Muḥammad ibn al-Faraj narrated to us.” Al-Bayhaqī also transmitted it in al-Sunan (4/316), by way of Muḥammad ibn Ādam al-Marwazī. Both narrated from Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah, from Jāmiʿ ibn Abī Shaddād, from Abū Wāʾil, who said:
Ḥudhayfah said to ʿAbd Allāh—that is, Ibn Masʿūd, may Allah be pleased with him—“[People are] observing retreat between your house and the house of Abū Mūsā, and you do not object—in another narration: do not forbid them?! Yet you know that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said...” He then cited it.
ʿAbd Allāh replied: “Perhaps you have forgotten while they remembered; or perhaps you erred while they were correct.”
I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission meeting the criteria of the two Shaykhs, al-Bukhārī and Muslim. Ibn Masʿūd’s statement does not explicitly declare Ḥudhayfah mistaken in his narration of the hadith’s wording. Rather, perhaps he considered him mistaken in citing it as evidence concerning the retreat that Ḥudhayfah denounced, since Ibn Masʿūd may have understood the hadith to mean: there is no complete iʿtikāf—just as the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “There is no faith for one who has no trustworthiness, and no religion for one who does not honor covenants.” And Allah knows best.
I then found that al-Ṭaḥāwī had transmitted the hadith in al-Mushkil (4/20) through the route
