Muslim then narrated a similar report from Abu Sa'id. Ibn Khuzaymah (1667) added: “One of the angels with whom I converse comes to me, and I dislike that they should smell its odor.” Its chain of transmission is authentic according to Muslim’s conditions. The words within the brackets are represented by dots in the original. Its editor commented: “A word unclear in the photographed copy; perhaps it is ‘one who converses with me.’” I say: What I have established is perhaps more likely. And Allah knows best.
Note: Al-Hafiz attributed this hadith in al-Fath (13/332) to Muslim, but this was a slip of mind or pen, since he thereby referred to a passage already mentioned. There (2/342), he correctly attributed it to Ibn Khuzaymah and Ibn Hibban, though he was incomplete in not attributing it to the Sunan collections.

It is narrated from Qatadah, from Salim ibn Abi al-Ja'd, from Ma'dan ibn Abi Talhah, from Thawban, who said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said—and then cited it. A number of reliable narrators transmitted it from him in this manner, so let us mention their chains of transmission:
1 and 2 — Ahmad (5/276 and 282) said: Affan narrated to us; Hammam and Aban narrated to us. They said: Qatadah narrated to us, with this chain. He then narrated it (5/277): Yazid narrated to us, from Hammam, with this chain.
3 — Sa'id ibn Abi Arubah, from Qatadah, with this chain. Ahmad (5/281) narrated it: Muhammad ibn Bakr and Abd al-Wahhab narrated to us. They said: Sa'id narrated to us, with this chain. Al-Bayhaqi (5/355) also narrated it through another route from Abd al-Wahhab ibn Ata:
