Hibban mentioned him in al-Thiqat (5/535)! Hence Ibn al-Qattan said: “He is not known.” As for the statement of al-Hafiz al-Iraqi, as quoted by al-Asqalani in al-Lisan—“His status is known”—it is unclear, since he is known only through this report attributed to the Prophet and the report attributed to the Companion. Ibn Adi also recorded the former in al-Kamil (6/2253–2254), as did al-Tabarani in Musnad al-Shamiyyin (p. 123, Islamic University facsimile). In the printed edition of al-Kamil, it appears as: “even if it were as thin as his hair!” This is one of the many corruptions found in this printed edition, edited by a committee of specialists under the publisher’s supervision! May Allah send blessings upon Muhammad, who said: “They will call it by a name other than its own.”
Note: I previously mentioned that al-Hakim said: “Authentic according to Muslim’s criteria.” This phrase was omitted from the printed edition of al-Mustadrak, so I restored it from al-Nawawi’s al-Majmu'. Yet there remains in Talkhis al-Mustadrak something indicating that it was present in the original of al-Mustadrak: namely, his words, “according to the criterion”; the word “Muslim” was omitted from it. From this, I inferred al-Dhahabi’s agreement with the authentication. And Allah knows best.
