I say: Two matters escaped him. First, Ibn Lahiʿah’s hadiths are authentic when transmitted from him by the ʿAbādilah, and this is one such transmission, namely that of Abu ʿAbd al-Rahman al-Muqriʾ, as stated above. Second, Ibn Lahiʿah was not alone in narrating it; rather, al-Layth ibn Saʿd and others corroborated him, as previously explained. In all of this, he was blindly followed by the annotator of Musnad Abi Yaʿla, Sayyid Husayn Salim Asad, who stated (3/285): “Its chain is weak because of Ibn Lahiʿah’s weakness; and Abu ʿAbd al-Rahman is ʿAbd Allah ibn Yazid al-Muqriʾ”!!
His statement, yabdūna, means that they go out to the open country seeking places where milk may be found in the grazing lands, as stated in al-Nihayah.
2779 — “Keep your property for yourself.” He said this to one who wished to give his mother’s jewelry in charity when she had not instructed him to do so.
Al-Tabarani narrated it (17/281/773) through two routes from Wahb ibn Jarir: My father told me: I heard Yahya ibn Ayyub narrating from Yazid ibn Abi Habib, from Abu al-Khayr Marthad ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Yazani, from ʿUqbah ibn ʿAmir, who said: A man came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: “My mother died, leaving jewelry behind, but she gave no instructions. Would it benefit her if I gave charity on her behalf?” He replied with the words quoted above.
I say: This is an authentic chain according to the criteria of al-Bukhari and Muslim. Yahya ibn Ayyub is al-Ghafiqi. Al-Hafiz said:
