Hammad narrated the hadith in this form. He also narrated it from Thabit, from Anas, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, without any doubt; and he also said: from Thabit, from Anas, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, as I recall. Ahmad (3/286) and Abu Yaʿla (3/893) recorded it. Its chain of transmission is authentic according to Muslim’s criteria. His uncertainty as to whether it was attributed to the Prophet does not harm it, since it carries the ruling of a hadith attributed to the Prophet, as is apparent—especially since he explicitly attributed it to him through the first route. Allah Most High knows best.
- “An order was given concerning one of Allah’s servants that he be struck with one hundred lashes in his grave. But he continued to plead and supplicate until they were reduced to a single lash. He was then struck with one lash, and his grave was filled with fire upon him. When it was lifted from him and he regained consciousness, he said, ‘Why did you lash me?’ They said, ‘You performed one prayer without purification, and you passed by an oppressed man without helping him.’”
Al-Tahawi recorded it in Mushkil al-Athar (4/231): Fahd ibn Sulayman related to us; he said: ʿAmr ibn ʿAwn al-Wasiti related to us; he said: Jaʿfar ibn Sulayman related to us, from ʿAsim, from Shaqiq, from Ibn Masʿud, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, that he said it. I say: This is a good chain of transmission. All its narrators are trustworthy and are among the narrators of al-Tahdhib, apart from this Fahd, who was a trustworthy and highly reliable authority, as Ibn Yunus stated in al-Ghuraba, as cited in Rijal Maʿani al-Athar (85/1). ʿAsim is Ibn Abi al-Najud, also known as Ibn Bahdalah. Al-Hafiz said: “Truthful, though prone to errors; an authority in Quranic recitation, and his hadith is found in the two Sahihs.”
Al-Mundhiri cited the hadith in al-Targhib (3/148), through the narration of Abu al-Shaykh Ibn Hayyan in Kitab al-Tawbikh, and indicated that it was weak. Thus, he overlooked this valuable source with its good chain of transmission. The hadith is not found in the printed portion of Kitab al-Tawbikh.
