Silsilat al-Ahadith al-SahihahNasir al-Din al-Albani

ʿĀʾishah—then he halted the chain, saying: “that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, …” and he mentioned the remainder of the report.

At-Tirmidhī remained silent about it, while Ibn ʿAdī said:
“Concerning this report they have differed over Hishām ibn ʿUrwah: some have halted it (mawqūf), others have transmitted it mursal; some narrated it ‘from ʿĀʾishah,’ and others said ‘from Abū Hurayrah.’ As for ʿUmar ibn ʿAlī, he has sound ḥadiths and, I hope, there is no problem with him.”

I say: In himself he is trustworthy, but he was guilty of very severe tadlīs (concealment in transmission) such that his narration is not counted even when he explicitly states “he narrated to us,” as is mentioned in his biography in Tahdhīb. Nevertheless, he is not the sole reporter, as will be shown, and the rest of the transmitters in the chain are trustworthy—men relied upon by al-Bukhārī and Muslim—except for Abū Bakr ibn Nāfiʿ, whose name is Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad; he is among the narrators exclusive to Muslim.

Among those who corroborated al-Maqdamī is Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Ṭufāwī, from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah with the same report. Ibn ʿAdī recorded it (2/300) and said, “This ḥadith is weak.”

I respond: Rather, it is authentic because of its corroborating chains and a supporting narration that will follow. Al-Ṭufāwī was cited as evidence by al-Bukhārī; although his memory is slightly deficient, his ḥadith is ḥasan, Allah willing.

Sharik ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Qāḍī also corroborated it with the wording:
“Whenever he heard an objectionable name he would change it, and he passed by a village called ʿAfrā, so he renamed it Khuḍrā.”

208 – “Whenever he heard an objectionable name he would change it; and he passed by a village that was called ʿAfrā, so he renamed it Khuḍrā.”

Al-Ṭabarānī recorded it in al-Muʿjam al-Ṣaghīr (p. 70) through Isḥāq ibn Yūsuf al-Azraq—Sharik narrated it to us—and he said, “No one transmitted it from Sharik except Isḥāq.”
