Note: In al-Durr al-Manthur (1/208), al-Suyuti attributed it to Ibn Abi Hatim, Abu Nu'aym in al-Dala'il, and Ibn Abd al-Barr in al-Tamhid, on the authority of Ya'la ibn Umayyah. You should know that Ibn Abd al-Barr relates it from Safwan ibn Ya'la as a mursal report, without mentioning his father. The same is the case with Ibn Abi Hatim, as cited in Tafsir Ibn Kathir, and Ibn Kathir found it strange. As for Abu Nu'aym's al-Dala'il, it appears there (p. 179) with a connected chain from his father, but through another route, just as it is found in the two Sahihs; it does not mention the revelation of the verse. Thus, this clarification is necessary.
2766 — “Give charity to people of all religions.”
Ibn Abi Shaybah recorded it in al-Musannaf (3/177): Jarir ibn Abd al-Hamid narrated to us, from Ash'ath, from Ja'far, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Give charity only to followers of your religion.” Then Allah, Most High, revealed: “It is not for you to guide them,” up to His saying: “Whatever good you spend will be fully repaid to you.” He said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, then mentioned it.
I say: This is a mursal chain of transmission, as stated in Nasb al-Rayah (4/398). Apart from Ash'ath—who was Ash'ath ibn Ishaq ibn Sa'd ibn Malik al-Ash'ari al-Qummi—and Ja'far—who was Ja'far ibn Abi al-Mughirah al-Khuza'i al-Qummi—its narrators are trustworthy narrators cited in the Six Books. The latter is truthful but prone to errors, as stated in al-Khulasah, and al-Taqrib says something similar. The one before him is trustworthy. As for Jarir ibn Abd al-Hamid, who narrated from him, although he is among the narrators of the Six Books, as we have noted, al-Hafiz said in al-Taqrib: “Trustworthy; his written record is sound. It has been said that toward the end of his life, he would make errors when narrating from memory.”
Abd Allah ibn Sa'd al-Dashtaki also corroborated him, but he narrated: Ash'ath ibn Ishaq narrated to us, from Ja'far ibn Abi al-Mughirah, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him:
