As for his statement that there is disagreement over al-Dahhak ibn Qays’s status as a Companion, it may have been a slip of the pen on al-Mundhiri’s part. For I have not seen anyone mention any disagreement over his Companionship. Rather, al-Hafiz said in al-Isabah, after citing al-Bukhari’s statement in al-Tarikh (2/2/332), “He was a Companion”: “Some regarded it as unlikely that he heard from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, but there is nothing improbable about it, for the youngest age given for him at the Prophet’s death, peace and blessings be upon him, is eight years.”
I then found a corroborating report for Sa‘id ibn Sulayman al-Wasiti from a trustworthy narrator, namely Surayj ibn Yunus: “Ubaydah ibn Humayd informed us of it.” Ibn ‘Asakir recorded it in Tarikh Dimashq (8/410). For this reason, it was transferred to Sahih al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib at the end of its second edition (p. 530).

Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu‘jam al-Awsat (1/98/2003), as did Ibn Abi Hatim in his exegesis and Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr in al-Tamhid (2/251), through three routes from Muhammad ibn Sabiq, who said: Ibrahim ibn Tahman informed us, from Abu al-Zubayr, from ‘Ata ibn Abi Rabah, from Safwan ibn Umayyah, who said: A man came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, smeared with khaluq (a saffron-based perfume) and wearing tailored garments, having entered the state of ihram for an umrah. He said, “How do you command me, Messenger of Allah, to perform my umrah?” Then Allah, Exalted is He, revealed: “And complete the hajj and umrah for Allah.” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Where is the one who asked about umrah?!” He replied, “[Here] I [am].” He then repeated the words just cited. Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr said:
