from Abū Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said—and he narrated the report.
I say: Its chain is authentic according to Muslim’s conditions.
Al-Bukhārī cites it in hanging form in his Ṣaḥīḥ (1/548) through ʿĀṣim ibn Muḥammad, from his brother Wāqid—Muḥammad ibn Zayd ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb—from his father, who said: I heard my father say—and ʿAbd Allāh said—that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
“O ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr, how will you be when you are left among the dregs of people?”
Ibrāhīm al-Harbī connected the chain in Gharīb al-Ḥadīth, Ḥanbal ibn Isḥāq did likewise in Kitāb al-Fitan, and Abū Yaʿlā (fol. 267/2) transmitted it through this very route from Ibn ʿUmar with wording identical to the narration of Abū Hurayrah, as noted in Fatḥ (13/32). Hence it is a strong corroboration for Abū Hurayrah’s report.
There is another supporting narration from Sahl ibn Saʿd al-Sāʿidī, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, once said to ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ—and he narrated the same.
It was recorded by Ibn Abī al-Dunyā in al-Amr bil-Maʿrūf (fol. 55/1), Ibn Shāhīn in a section of his narrations (fol. 210/1 – Maḥmūdiyyah), Ibn ʿAdī (36/1), and likewise by al-Ṭabarānī, as stated in Fatḥ, from Abū Ḥāzim on his authority. Of the two isnāds from Abū Ḥāzim reported by Ibn Shāhīn, one is good.
207 – “He used to change an objectionable name to one that was good.”
It was reported by al-Tirmidhī (2/137) and Ibn ʿAdī (245/2) through Abū Bakr ibn Nāfiʿ al-Baṣrī, who said: ʿUmar ibn ʿAlī al-Maqdamī narrated to us, from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, from his father—who on one occasion said: from
