2754 — “When he wished to sleep, he would place his hand beneath his right cheek and say: ‘O Allah, protect me from Your punishment on the Day You resurrect Your servants.’”
It has been transmitted in reports from al-Bara ibn ʿAzib, Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman, and Hafsah bint ʿUmar.
1 — As for the hadith of al-Bara, it is narrated by Abu Ishaq al-Sabiʿi, and its chain of transmission has been related from him in several differing forms:
The first: from him, from al-Bara, with this wording. Sufyan al-Thawri narrated it from him in this manner. It was recorded by al-Bukhari in al-Adab al-Mufrad (1215), al-Nasa’i in The Deeds of Day and Night (449/753, edited by Dr. Faruq), and Ahmad (4/290, 298, and 303). Zakariyya—namely, Ibn Abi Za’idah—also narrated it from him in this manner. Ibn Abi Shaybah recorded it in al-Musannaf (9/76/6588 and 10/251/9360).
Yunus ibn ʿAmr—namely, Ibn Abi Ishaq—also narrated it, saying: “My father related to me from al-Bara ibn ʿAzib,” with this wording. Abu Yaʿla recorded it in his Musnad (2/472), and Ibn Hibban transmitted it from him in his Sahih (2350, al-Mawarid), through Yunus ibn Bukayr from him. Both men named Yunus have been criticized with respect to their retention, so it is feared that one of them erred in stating an explicit direct transmission between Abu Ishaq and al-Bara—particularly since Abu Yaʿla transmitted it through the very same chain from Abu Ishaq, from Abu ʿUbaydah, from his father—that is, Ibn Masʿud. This version has also been corroborated, as will follow. Shuʿbah likewise narrated it from Abu Ishaq in this manner.
