Third: Sulaymān ibn Bilāl, whose narration contains the first, second, fourth, and fifth additions. Al-Bukhārī related it (13/465/7502), as did al-Adab al-Mufrad (23/50). He also corroborated Abū al-Ḥubāb, Muḥammad ibn Kaʿb, in his report that he heard Abū Hurayrah narrate it in abridged form. It was related by al-Bukhārī in al-Adab al-Mufrad (27/65), Ibn Ḥibbān (2035 and 2036), and Aḥmad (2/295, 383, 406, and 455). Its chain contains an unknown narrator, though al-Mundhirī deemed it strong in al-Targhīb (3/226), perhaps due to its supporting reports.
2742 — “Spoils of war were not made lawful for those before us. That was because Allah saw our weakness and incapacity, and so He made them lawful for us.”
Aḥmad related it in al-Musnad (2/317), as did al-Sulamī in Ṣaḥīfat Hammām (no. 87); through the latter, Abū al-Qāsim al-Aṣbahānī related it in al-Ḥujjah (fol. 43/2), and al-Bayhaqī (6/290), through ʿAbd al-Razzāq: Maʿmar narrated to us from Hammām ibn Munabbih, who said: “This is what Abū Hurayrah narrated to us from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.” He then mentioned many hadiths, this being one of them.
It appears in Muṣannaf ʿAbd al-Razzāq (5/241/9492), through this chain, in a lengthy version; this is its final portion. Aḥmad (2/318) and al-Sulamī (123) also narrated it from him. Likewise, Muslim related it (5/145–146) through Muḥammad ibn Rāfiʿ, and Ibn Ḥibbān (4788) through Isḥāq ibn Ibrāhīm; both said: ʿAbd al-Razzāq narrated to us through the same chain. Ibn al-Mubārak also corroborated him, narrating it at length from Maʿmar through the same chain. Al-Bukhārī related it (6/220/3124), as did Muslim, though he did not cite its wording.
Note: In his annotation on the Muṣannaf, Shaykh al-Aʿẓamī attributed it only to al-Bukhārī. This is a grave oversight, for it gives the initial impression that Muslim did not relate it.
