ibn ʿUrwah, from him, in an abridged form with similar wording. Al-Ḥāfiẓ likewise attributed it (1/483) to Abū Dāwūd, but he connected its chain only through Ibn Shihāb, from ʿUrwah. I shall trace its sources in “The Book of Dress” in Ṣaḥīḥ Abī Dāwūd, if Allah Most High wills.
2718 — “No one’s wealth has benefited us as Abu Bakr’s wealth has.”
Ibn Rāhūyah narrated it in his Musnad (4/80/1): Sufyān al-Thawrī informed us, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUrwah—“if Allah wills”—from ʿĀʾishah, that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said this.
I say: This chain of transmission is authentic according to the conditions of the two Shaykhs. Al-Zuhrī’s saying, “if Allah wills,” does not detract from it, for a narrator may sometimes be uncertain; moreover, more than one narrator transmitted it without this uncertainty. Thus, al-Ḥumaydī (1/121/250), Abū Yaʿlā in his Musnad (3/1090), and Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim in al-Sunnah (1230) narrated it from Sufyān through the same chain. This Sufyān is Ibn ʿUyaynah.
Ibn Ḥibbān (2167) narrated, through Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, from his father, from ʿĀʾishah, who said: “Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, spent forty thousand on the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.” Its chain is authentic.
The hadith is corroborated by a report from Abu Hurayrah, attributed to the Prophet with the same wording, with the addition: “He said: Abu Bakr wept and said, ‘Has Allah benefited me through anything other than you? Has Allah benefited me through anything other than you? Has Allah benefited me through anything other than you?’” Aḥmad (2/366) narrated it: Muʿāwiyah narrated to us; Abū Isḥāq—that is, al-Fazārī—narrated to us, from al-Aʿmash, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from him.
I say: This chain of transmission is authentic according to the conditions of the two Shaykhs. Muʿāwiyah is Ibn ʿAmr al-Azdī, and Abū Isḥāq’s name was Ibrāhīm ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥārith.
