and Aḥmad (6/183 and 234), Abū Yaʿlā (3/1088), and Ibn Rāhūyah in his Musnad (4/64/2 and 128/1). The wording is Ibn Rāhūyah’s; the first addition is from al-Nasāʾī and Ibn Ḥibbān, and the other from al-Bayhaqī, through Bard ibn Sinān Abū al-ʿAlāʾ, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUrwah, from ʿĀʾishah, who said: She then mentioned it.
I say: This is a good chain of transmission. Its narrators are trustworthy and among the narrators of the two Shaykhs, apart from this Bard, who is trustworthy but has slight weakness. I have also found another route for it, through the narration of Dāwūd ibn Manṣūr: al-Layth informed us, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from Yūnus al-Aylī, from al-Awzāʿī, from Umm Kulthūm bint Asmāʾ, from ʿĀʾishah, with the same report. Abū al-Shaykh narrated it in al-Aqrān (1/2, Egyptian photographic edition).
Dāwūd ibn Manṣūr was truthful, though he made mistakes. I was unable to identify ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, because there is a blank after his name in the original; and Umm Kulthūm bint Asmāʾ has not been mentioned in the biographical works.
2717 — “It distracts me from my prayer,” or, he said, “It preoccupies me”—meaning the khamīṣah (a patterned garment).
Ibn Rāhūyah narrated it in al-Musnad (4/64/2): Abū Muʿāwiyah informed us; Hishām informed us, from his father, from ʿĀʾishah, who said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, had a khamīṣah, which he gave to Abū Jahm. It was said, “O Messenger of Allah, this khamīṣah is better than the anbajāniyyah (a plain, coarse woollen garment).” He replied: She then mentioned it.
I say: This chain of transmission is authentic according to the conditions of the two Shaykhs. They both narrated it: al-Bukhārī (4/93/1–2) and Muslim (2/78), through other routes from Hishām, with similar wording. Al-Bukhārī and Muslim also narrated it through routes from ʿUrwah, from her. Abū Dāwūd and others likewise narrated it. Al-Bukhārī cited it in suspended form from Hishām
