and 274), and by Ibn Jarir in his exegesis (3/160–161), through Saʿid ibn al-Musayyib, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say this. Abu Hurayrah would then recite: “And I seek refuge for her and her offspring in You from Satan, the accursed.” The wording is that of al-Bukhari.

Al-Aʿraj corroborated this from Abu Hurayrah in a report attributed to the Prophet, with the wording: “Satan pricks every child of Adam in his sides with his two fingers when he is born, except Jesus, son of Mary. He went to prick him, but pricked the veil instead.” It was narrated by al-Bukhari (3286), Ahmad (2/523), and Ibn Jarir (3/161). Abu Yunus Sulayman, the freedman of Abu Hurayrah, also corroborated it from the Prophet in a shortened version with similar wording. It was narrated by Muslim and Ibn Jarir.

Suhayl ibn Abi Salih also corroborated it from his father, from Abu Hurayrah, in a shortened version: “The newborn’s cry when it falls is a prod from Satan.” Muslim narrated it, as did Ibn Jarir through Qays, from al-Aʿmash, from Abu Salih, from him, with wording similar to Saʿid’s narration. Ajlan, the freedman of al-Mishʿal, also corroborated it from Abu Hurayrah with wording similar to al-Aʿraj’s narration, except that he mentioned Mary, daughter of Imran, and her son Jesus, peace be upon him, while omitting the words: “He went to prick …” It was narrated by Ahmad (2/288, 292, and 319) and Ibn Jarir. Its chain of transmission is good.

Abd al-Rahman Abu al-ʿAlaʾ also corroborated it from Abu Hurayrah with the wording: “Every human being whom his mother bears is struck in his sides by Satan, except Mary and her son. Have you not—”
