and al-Tabarani in al-Muʿjam al-Kabir (11/149/11262). All of them narrated it through Muhammad ibn Yazid ibn Khunays, who said: Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn Ubayd Allah ibn Abi Yazid narrated to me. He said: Ibn Jurayj said to me, “O Hasan, your grandfather, Ubayd Allah ibn Abi Yazid, narrated to me from Ibn Abbas, who said: A man came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, last night I saw in a dream that I was praying behind a tree. I saw myself recite a verse of prostration, and I saw the tree prostrating as I prostrated. I heard it saying: “O Allah, record ...” and so on.’” Ibn Abbas said: “I then saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, recite the verse of prostration, and I heard him, while prostrating, say the same as the man had related of the tree’s words.”
The wording is that of Ibn Hibban. Al-Hakim said: “This is an authentic hadith. Its narrators are Meccans, and none of them has been mentioned with any criticism.” Al-Dhahabi concurred with him. I say: This is one of his remarkable inconsistencies, for in Hasan’s biography in al-Mizan he said: “Al-Uqayli said: ‘He is not corroborated in it.’ Another said: ‘He is unknown; no one other than Ibn Khunays narrated from him.’” In al-Kashif, he said: “He is not an authority.”
As for al-Tirmidhi, he said in both places: “A singular hadith; we know it only through this route.” But in one version, at the first place, he added: “good.”
