The first: from him, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yazīd, from al-Barāʾ. Al-Tirmidhī recorded it in al-Shamāʾil (no. 252), al-Nasāʾī in ʿAmal al-Yawm (755), and Aḥmad (4/300), through the route of Isrāʾīl, from Abū Isḥāq, from his father, from Abū Isḥāq, from Abū Burdah, from al-Barāʾ, with the same wording. Al-Nasāʾī (758), Abū al-Shaykh in Akhlāq al-Nabī (p. 167), and al-Tirmidhī in al-Sunan (3396) also recorded it. He said: “This is a good, singular hadith through this route. Al-Thawrī narrated this hadith from Abū Isḥāq, from al-Barāʾ, without mentioning anyone between them. Shuʿbah narrated it from Abū Isḥāq, from Abū ʿUbaydah and another man, from al-Barāʾ. Shurayk”—in one version, “Isrāʾīl,” which is correct in light of what has preceded—“narrated it from Abū Isḥāq, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yazīd, from al-Barāʾ; and from Abū Isḥāq, from Abū ʿUbaydah, from ʿAbd Allāh, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, similarly.”
The third is Sufyān’s—namely, al-Thawrī’s—narration from Abū Isḥāq, from al-Barāʾ. Al-Nasāʾī (753), Aḥmad (4/298), and Abū al-Shaykh in Akhlāq al-Nabī (p. 167) recorded it through three routes from him. The hadith master said in al-Fatḥ (11/115): “Its chain is authentic.”
The fourth is Shuʿbah’s narration from Abū Isḥāq, from Abū ʿUbaydah and another man, from al-Barāʾ. Aḥmad recorded it (4/281): Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us; he said: Shuʿbah narrated to us
