It was transmitted by al-Tirmidhi (3266) and al-Bayhaqi (2/87/2), through the route of Abd Allah ibn Jaʿfar, who said: Abd Allah ibn Dīnār narrated to us from Ibn ʿUmar with this wording. Al-Tirmidhi said: “It is a singular hadith; we know it from the hadith of Abd Allah ibn Dīnār, from Ibn ʿUmar, only through this route. Abd Allah ibn Jaʿfar ibn Jaʿfar is considered weak; Ibn Maʿīn and others declared him weak. He was the father of ʿAlī ibn al-Madīnī.”
I say: Mūsā ibn ʿUbaydah also followed him in narrating it from Abd Allah ibn Dīnār with this wording. Ibn Abī Ḥātim transmitted it, as cited in Ibn Kathīr’s Exegesis (4/217). In The Scattered Pearls (6/98), al-Suyūṭī also attributed it to Ibn Abī Shaybah, ʿAbd ibn Ḥumayd, Ibn al-Mundhir, Ibn Mardūyah, and al-Bayhaqī in The Branches of Faith. I say: Mūsā ibn ʿUbaydah is likewise weak, so perhaps one of them may be strengthened by the other. The hadith also has another supporting narration from Abū Hurayrah, attributed to the Prophet, with wording similar to the hadith of Ibn ʿUmar, but without the sermon and the verse. It is cited in The Ultimate Aim (312) with a good chain of transmission.
2701 — “I have not left behind after me any trial more harmful to men than women.”
It was transmitted by al-Bukhārī at the beginning of the Book of Marriage (18), Muslim (no. 2741), al-Tirmidhī (2781), who graded it authentic, Ibn Mājah (3998), and Aḥmad (5/200 and 210), through several routes from Sulaymān al-Taymī, from Abū ʿUthmān al-Nahdī, from Usāmah ibn Zayd ibn Ḥārithah [and Saʿīd ibn Zayd ibn ʿAmr ibn Nufayl], from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. Al-Tirmidhī said: “It is a good, authentic hadith. More than one reliable narrator transmitted it from Sulaymān al-Taymī, from Abū ʿUthmān, from Usāmah ibn Zayd, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, without mentioning in it: ‘from Saʿīd ibn ʿAmr ibn Nufayl.’ We know of no one besides al-Muʿtamir who said: ‘from Usāmah ibn Zayd and Saʿīd ibn Zayd.’”
