“We know of no hadith that Ashʿath transmitted with this chain other than this one.”

I say: Ashʿath ibn Sawwār is disputed over. Muslim included him in corroborating chains, so he is among those whose reports may be used for corroboration. But I have not identified his teacher, Ashʿath. Allah knows best. Moreover, the hadith is authentic through the narration of Abū Hurayrah, attributed to the Prophet, with similar wording, except that it says, “and those who make images,” in place of, “and one who kills a soul …” Its documentation has already preceded under no. 512.

2700 — “O people! Your Lord is one and your father is one. Indeed, no Arab has superiority over a non-Arab, nor does a non-Arab have superiority over an Arab; nor does a red person have superiority over a black person, nor a black person over a red person, except through piety. ‘Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most pious of you.’ Have I conveyed the message?” They said, “Yes, O Messenger of Allah!” He said, “Then let those present convey it to those absent.”

Abū Nuʿaym recorded it in al-Ḥilyah (3/100), and al-Bayhaqī in Shuʿab al-Īmān (2/88/1), through the route of Shaybah Abū Qilābah al-Qaysī, from al-Jurayrī, from Abū Naḍrah, from Jābir, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, addressed us in the middle of the Days of Tashrīq, delivering the Farewell Sermon, and he said: Then he mentioned it.

Abū Nuʿaym said: “It is singular among the reports of Abū Naḍrah from Jābir. We have recorded it only through the narration of Abū Qilābah from al-Jurayrī, from him.” Al-Bayhaqī said: “Its chain contains someone who is unknown.”

I say: He seems to be referring to Shaybah Abū Qilābah al-Qaysī, for I have found no biographical entry for him, though
