2699 — “A neck will emerge from the Fire and speak, saying: ‘Today I have been charged with three: every arrogant, obstinate tyrant; everyone who ascribed another deity alongside Allah; and everyone who killed a soul without [legal] retaliation for a soul.’ It will then coil around them and cast them into the depths of Hell.”
It was recorded by Aḥmad (3/40), ʿAbd ibn Ḥumayd in al-Muntakhab min al-Musnad (fol. 118/2), Abū Yaʿlā in his Musnad (1/314–315 and 315), and al-Ṭabarānī in al-Awsaṭ (no. 4138), through several routes from ʿAṭiyyah al-ʿAwfī, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, as a report attributed to the Prophet with this wording. I say: ʿAṭiyyah is weak, but he has been corroborated. Al-Ṭabarānī said in al-Awsaṭ (no. 314): “Aḥmad ibn Rushdayn narrated to us: ʿAbd al-Ghaffār ibn Dāwūd, Abū Ṣāliḥ al-Ḥarrānī, narrated to us: Mūsā ibn Aʿyan narrated to us, from al-Aʿmash, from Saʿd ibn ʿUbaydah, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī,” with this wording, but without the words: “It will then coil around them …”
Al-Bazzār also recorded it (fol. 329/1–2) through several routes from ʿAṭiyyah, with this wording. In one of his versions, through ʿAbd Allāh ibn Bishr, from al-Aʿmash, from ʿAṭiyyah, it reads: “A neck will emerge from the Fire and speak with a fluent, articulate tongue. It has two eyes with which it sees and a tongue with which it speaks, and it says: ‘I have been commanded concerning everyone who ascribed another deity alongside Allah …’” The hadith continues: “It will set off with them ahead of all the other people by five hundred years.”
I say: In this wording, it is rejected in my view, because ʿAbd Allāh ibn Bishr alone narrated it. He is ʿAbd Allāh ibn Bishr ibn al-Tayyahān al-Raqqī, concerning whom there is disagreement. Al-Sājī said, quoting Ibn Maʿīn: “ʿAbd Allāh ibn Bishr, from whom Muʿammar ibn Sulaymān narrates, is a liar. There is no rejected hadith narrated by any Muslim (!) except that he narrated it from al-Aʿmash.” He cited this in al-Tahdhīb. Ibn Ḥibbān said in al-Ḍuʿafāʾ (The Weak Narrators):
