- “The slain person will come holding his head in one hand and gripping his killer by the collar with the other, while his jugular veins gush blood, until he brings him before the Throne. The slain person will say: ‘Lord of the worlds, this man killed me.’ Allah will say to the killer: ‘You are doomed!’ Then He will take him into the Fire.”
Al-Ṭabarānī recorded it in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (3/95/2–96/1) and al-Awsaṭ (no. 4375): al-ʿAbbās ibn al-Faḍl al-Asfāṭī narrated to us; Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Uways informed us; my father narrated to me from ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Faḍl, from Nāfiʿ ibn Jubayr ibn Muṭʿim, from Ibn ʿAbbās, that a man asked him, saying: “O Abū al-ʿAbbās, is there repentance for a killer?” Ibn ʿAbbās said—seemingly astonished by his question—“What are you saying?!” The man repeated his question, so he again said to him, “What are you saying?!” two or three times. Then Ibn ʿAbbās said: “How can he have repentance? I heard your Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, say”—and he then cited it.
He said: “No one narrated this hadith from ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Faḍl except Abū Uways; his son Ismāʿīl alone narrated it from him.”
I say: He was among the shaykhs of al-Bukhārī and Muslim, though his retention was weak. His father was similar; his name was ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Uways, except that al-Bukhārī did not narrate from him. Those above him in the chain are trustworthy according to the criteria of both of them. Thus, the hadith is good, if Allah wills. Indeed, it is authentic, for it has come through other chains:
- Shabābah said: Warqāʾ ibn ʿUmar narrated to us from ʿAmr ibn Dīnār, from Ibn ʿAbbās, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who said—and he cited it in a somewhat abridged form, adding:
