as al-Hafiz explicitly states in al-Tahdhib. His memory has been criticized, and he alluded to this in al-Taqrib when he said: “Truthful, but makes mistakes.” Al-Dhahabi said in al-Mizan: “His reports are acceptable.” Thus, his reports are good, if Allah Most High wills.
As for al-Hafiz’s statement in Mukhtasar Zawa’id al-Bazzar (1/565), “Its chain is authentic!”—this is clearly lenient. Al-Tayalisi also recorded it in his Musnad (2756), and al-Bayhaqi (2/125/2) through his chain: Abu Talhah al-Aʿma narrated to us from a man whom he had identified, from Ibn ʿAbbas, with similar wording: “O young men of Quraysh, do not commit adultery, for whoever Allah preserves during his youth shall enter Paradise.”
If Abu Talhah al-Aʿma is not the aforementioned al-Rasibi, then I do not know who he is. Perhaps “the man” was Muʿawiyah ibn Qurrah, for al-Dulabi recorded it in al-Kuna (2/18), with an authentic chain, from Abu Qutaybah, from Shaddad Abu Talhah, from Muʿawiyah ibn Qurrah, from Ibn ʿAbbas, with similar wording. Abu Qutaybah was Salm ibn Qutaybah al-Shuʿayri, a trustworthy narrator whose reports were recorded by al-Bukhari. It may be, then, that al-Rasibi had two chains for this hadith from Ibn ʿAbbas, relating it at times through this one and at other times through that one; and each narrated from him what he had heard from him, while all are trustworthy. Allah knows best.
