As for my statement concerning Yaʿqūb al-Madanī, “Perhaps he is included in Ibn Ḥibbān’s al-Thiqāt,” this book has now been published, yet we did not find him in it; nor is he found in al-Haythamī’s arrangement of it, nor in Jāmiʿ Fahāris al-Thiqāt, compiled by our brother Ḥusayn Ibrāhīm Zahrān, nor in my own index of it, entitled Taysīr Intifāʿ al-Khillān bi-Thiqāt Ibn Ḥibbān—may Allah facilitate its publication. Al-Haythamī’s statement regarding this Yaʿqūb has already been cited: “No one declared him weak.” Had he been included in al-Thiqāt—a work whose contents al-Haythamī knew better than most—he would have declared him trustworthy, given how frequently he relied upon it.
Among the errors is that the commentator on al-Mizzī’s Tahdhīb attributed him to Thiqāt Ibn Ḥibbān (7/642). Yet everyone listed in the location to which he referred belongs to the generation following the Successors! Then, two lines later, he repeated the error by attributing to it the narrator from him, al-Walīd ibn Abī al-Walīd al-Madanī. He is in it at (7/252), and Ibn Ḥibbān also listed him among the Successors at (5/494).
2693 — “O ʿĀʾishah! When Allah sends down His might upon the people of His vengeance, while righteous people are among them, they too are afflicted along with them; then they will be resurrected according to their intentions [and deeds].”
Ibn Ḥibbān transmitted it in his Ṣaḥīḥ (no. 1846, Mawārid), and al-Bayhaqī in Shuʿab al-Īmān (2/441/1), through ʿAmr ibn ʿUthmān al-Raqqī, who said: Zuhayr ibn Muʿāwiyah narrated to us, from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, from his father, from ʿĀʾishah, who said: “I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, when Allah sends down His might upon the people of the earth, while righteous people are among them, will they perish along with their destruction?’” He replied, and then cited it. The additional wording is from Shuʿab al-Īmān and also from al-Iḥsān (7270).
I say: This is a good chain of transmission, were it not that al-Raqqī was deemed weak because of his memory. Ibn ʿAdī said: “He has sound hadiths from Zuhayr and others. Trustworthy people narrated from him, and he is among those whose hadith may be recorded.”
