In sum, it is not permissible for men to let their garments extend below the ankles. If this is coupled with the intention of pride, the sin is more severe.
Among the misfortunes of Muslim youth today is their wearing their trousers below the ankles—especially the Charleston-style trousers. Along with this defect, they are extremely wide at the ankles and extremely tight around the thighs and buttocks, outlining and accentuating the private parts. One sees them standing before Allah in prayer while virtually naked! To Allah we belong, and to Him we shall return.
Remarkably, some of them, despite possessing a measure of Islamic learning, attempt to cite as proof for the permissibility of this lengthening Abu Bakr’s statement when he heard the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, say: “Whoever drags his garment out of pride, Allah will not look at him on the Day of Resurrection.” He said: “O Messenger of Allah, one side of my waist-wrapper slips down unless I keep attending to it.” The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, replied: “You are not among those who do it out of pride.” Al-Bukhari and others, such as Ahmad, narrated it. In one narration he added: “It sometimes slips down.” Al-Bayhaqi likewise narrated it in Shuʿab al-Iman (2/221/2).
I say: The hadith clearly states that Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, did not deliberately lengthen his garment. Rather, it shows that it would slip down unintentionally, and that he would nevertheless keep attending to it; despite this, it would sometimes slip down. Al-Hafiz said (10/217), following Ahmad’s narration: “It was as though the fastening by which he tightened it would come loose when he moved, whether by walking or otherwise, without his choosing it. When he kept watch over it, it would not slip down, for whenever it was about to slip down, he would tighten it.” He then mentioned that some narrations state that he was thin.
I say: Can this be cited as evidence when the difference is as clear as the sun between what happened to Abu Bakr unintentionally and one who deliberately lets his garment hang below the ankles all the time? We ask Allah to protect us from caprice.
