“Nahamahu” means: he rebuked him. I then found another chain for it. Al-Bazzar (1310) said: Maʿmar ibn Sahl narrated to us; Khalid ibn Makhlad narrated to us; Yahya ibn ʿUmayr narrated to us, from Hisham, with the same report. Al-Bazzar said: “We know of no one who narrated it from Hisham except Yahya.”
I say: Abu Hatim said: “Acceptable in hadith.” Ibn Hibban mentioned him in al-Thiqat (7/601), and al-Dhahabi said: “Truthful.” This is the relied-upon judgment; thus, al-Hafiz’s grading of him as “acceptable” is itself unacceptable. Four trustworthy narrators reported from him. All the other narrators are trustworthy, so the chain is good and the hadith is authentic through it.
2678 — “Would one of you beat his wife as he beats a slave-woman? Indeed, the best of you are those who are best to their wives.”
Al-Bazzar recorded it in his Musnad (no. 1484, Kashf al-Astar), saying: Zakariyya ibn Yahya al-Darir narrated to us; Shababah ibn Sawwar narrated to us; al-Mughirah ibn Muslim narrated to us, from Hisham ibn ʿUrwah, from his father, from al-Zubayr, who said: The Messenger of Allah said—then he cited it. Al-Bazzar said: “We know of no one who said in it, ‘from al-Zubayr,’ except Mughirah; and we heard it only from Zakariyya, from Shababah, from Mughirah.” Al-Haythami said in al-Majmaʿ (4/303): “Al-Bazzar narrated it from his shaykh Zakariyya ibn Yahya ibn Ayyub al-Darir, whom I do not know; but the rest of its narrators are narrators of the Sahih.”
