It was recorded by al-Bukhārī in al-Kunā (50/436), ʿAbd ibn Ḥumayd in al-Muntakhab (3/208/1445), and al-Ḥākim (2/82–83), and from him by al-Bayhaqī (4/16–17). I say: al-Ḥākim gave no evaluation of it, while al-Dhahabī identified a defect in it, commenting: “I say: there is a break in its chain.” This is what he said, though it would perhaps be more correct to say that there is an unknown narrator in it, for this ʿAbd al-Raḥmān is known only through this report, and no one declared him trustworthy besides Ibn Ḥibbān (5/568). Yet he explicitly stated that he heard it directly, so where is the break in the chain?! It is possible that he meant Ṣāliḥ ibn Kaysān’s wording: “He said: Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān said.” But I consider this highly unlikely, for Ṣāliḥ is trustworthy and did not practise tadlīs; thus, there is no difference between his saying “he said,” “from,” “he mentioned,” and similar expressions, as is established in the science of hadith terminology.
The third is from ʿUmar ibn Sahl al-Māzinī, from ʿUmar ibn Ṣuhbān, from Ṣafwān ibn Sulaym, from Abū Salamah, from him, attributed to the Prophet, with wording similar to it, except that he said: “And an eye from which even a tear the size of a fly’s head flows out for fear of Allah.” It was recorded by al-Bazzār (2/262/1659) and others. ʿUmar ibn Sahl al-Māzinī is weak, though he was corroborated; the defect, however, lies with his teacher, Ibn Ṣuhbān, who alone reported this addition: “the size of a fly’s head.” For this reason, I included this hadith of his in al-Ḍaʿīfah (1562 and 5144).
5—As for the hadith of Anas, Shabīb ibn Bishr reports it from him, attributed to the Prophet, like the hadith of al-Tirmidhī. It was recorded by Abū Yaʿlā in his Musnad (7/307–308), and, through him, by al-Ḍiyāʾ.
