“Abū Shurayḥ—who was ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Shurayḥ—said: ‘I later heard him say, after he had said: “The Fire has been forbidden to touch an eye that lowered its gaze from what Allah has forbidden, or an eye that was put out in the path of Allah.”’”
Al-Ḥākim said: “Its chain of transmission is authentic.” Al-Dhahabī agreed with him! This is what he said, despite having included Muḥammad ibn Shumayr in al-Mīzān and stated: “No one other than ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Shurayḥ narrated from him.” No one declared him reliable except Ibn Ḥibbān; yet Ibn Ḥibbān said: “The Egyptians narrated from him.” Ibn al-Qaṭṭān categorically stated that ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Shurayḥ alone narrated from him and that he is unknown, as recorded in al-Tahdhīb. For this reason, he said in al-Taqrīb: “Acceptable”—that is, when corroborated.
4—As for the hadith of Abū Hurayrah, it has three routes:
The first is from ʿUmar ibn Rāshid al-Yamāmī, from Yaḥyā ibn Abī Kathīr, from Abū Salamah ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from him. However, in place of “an eye that lowered its gaze from what Allah has forbidden,” he said: “an eye that was put out in the path of Allah.” The remainder is the same. It was recorded by al-Ḥākim (2/82), and through him by al-Bayhaqī (1/488/795). Al-Ḥākim said: “Its chain of transmission is authentic!” Al-Dhahabī rebutted him, saying: “I say: ʿUmar was declared weak.”
The second is from Ṣāliḥ ibn Kaysān, who said: Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān said: “I heard Abū Hurayrah say...” Then he related it approximately as in the hadith under discussion, but without the third clause.
