The second: Abū al-Faraj ibn al-Musallamah related in “A Session from the Amālī” (120/1–2), from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Quraysh, who said: I found in “the Book of al-Faraj”: ʿUmar ibn Yazīd narrated to us; Maʿn ibn Khālid narrated to us, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from him. I say: This is a weak chain of transmission and contains several defects:
First: al-Faraj—namely, Ibn Faḍālah al-Shāmī—is weak. Second: ʿUmar ibn Yazīd, who apparently is al-Naḍrī al-Shāmī. Abū Zurʿah mentioned him in “Reliable Syrian Narrators,” and Ibn Ḥibbān said (2/89): “He was among those who would transpose chains of transmission and elevate mursal reports. It is not permissible to rely upon him unreservedly; though there is no harm in considering his reports when they agree with those of reliable narrators.” Third: Maʿbad ibn Khālid, who apparently was among the shaykhs of Baqiyyah, is unknown.
3—As for the hadith of Abū Rayḥānah:
ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Shurayḥ said: I heard Muḥammad ibn Shumayr al-Ruʿaynī say: I heard Abū ʿĀmir al-Janbī say: I heard Abū Rayḥānah say: “We were with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, on a military expedition ...”—the hadith—which includes that he then said, peace and blessings be upon him: “The Fire has been forbidden to touch an eye that shed tears or wept out of fear of Allah, and the Fire has been forbidden to touch an eye that remained awake in the path of Allah.” Or he said: “The Fire has been forbidden to touch a third eye,” which Muḥammad ibn Bukayr did not specify.
Ibn Abī Shaybah recorded it in al-Muṣannaf (7/158/2–159/1), and through him Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim in al-Jihād (folio 86/2), as did Aḥmad (4/134–135) and al-Ḥākim (2/83), and through him al-Bayhaqī (9/149) (1). Aḥmad and al-Ḥākim added:
