As for the hadith of Muʿāwiyah ibn Ḥaydah, it is narrated by Abū Ḥabīb al-Ghanawī, from Bahz ibn Ḥakīm, from his father, from his grandfather, attributed to the Prophet with this wording. Al-Khulʿī recorded it in al-Fawāʾid (folio 106/1), and Ibn ʿAsākir in al-Tārīkh (3/297/1), both through Abū Yaʿlā, from Abū Ḥabīb al-Ghanawī with it. I say: This is a good chain of transmission, were it not that I have found no one who mentions this Abū Ḥabīb. Al-Haythamī alluded to this when he said (5/288): “Al-Ṭabarānī narrated it, and its chain includes Abū Ḥabīb al-ʿAnqazī—or, it is said, al-Qanawī—whom I did not recognize.” He said something similar in al-Targhīb (2/154 and 3/64). Al-Mizzī mentioned him among those who narrated from Bahz, where his attribution appears as al-Qanawī, whereas in the two aforementioned sources for the hadith it appears as al-Ghanawī. This is a serious discrepancy in his tribal attribution, and I have not been able to determine which is correct, as I explained in my commentary on the hadith in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Targhīb wa-al-Tarhīb (no. 1217).

As for the hadith of Ibn ʿAbbās, it came through two routes:
The first: Shuʿayb ibn Ruzayq, Abū Shaybah, narrated to us from ʿAṭāʾ al-Khurāsānī, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn Abī Rabāḥ, from him, with the wording: “Two eyes will not be touched by the Fire…”—the hadith—omitting the third clause. It was recorded by al-Tirmidhī (1639), al-Bayhaqī (1/488/796), and al-Mizzī in al-Tahdhīb (12/525). Al-Tirmidhī said: “A good, singular hadith; we know it only through the narration of Shuʿayb.” I say: He is truthful but makes errors, as al-Ḥāfiẓ said. Rather, the defect lies with ʿAṭāʾ al-Khurāsānī, for he frequently makes errors.
